Clive Cussler Thrills Us! ITW's First Lifetime Achievement Award Goes to Legendary Author

The legendary Clive Cussler has been named recipient of ITW's first Lifetime Achievement Award. He began writing novels in 1965 and published his first work created around his continuing series hero, Dirk Pitt, in 1973.

A small sampling of Clive Cussler's amazing achievements and contributions to the thriller field include:

26 consecutive New York Times fiction best sellers. Sales exceeding 190 million books, published in more than 45 languages in more than 100 countries. All have made the top of the New York Times and Publisher Weekly's lists as well bestseller lists in countries around the world.

Founder of the National Underwater & Marine Agency, (NUMA) a 501C3 non-profit organization that dedicates itself to American maritime and naval history. Credited with finding more than 60 missing ships and planes including the CSS Hunley, the first submarine ever to sink a ship in battle.

A few of the many ships he has found include the Confederate submarine Hunley; The Carpathia, the ship that rescued the Titanic survivors; the U-20, the submarine that sank the Lusitania; and the Union frigate Cumberland, sunk by the famous ironclad Merrimack.

Cussler is a fellow of the Explorers Club of New York, who honored him with the Lowell Thomas Award for outstanding underwater exploration, the Royal Geographic Society in London, and the American Society of Oceanographers and numerous other oceanographic and historical societies.

He was also honored for distinguished service by the National Maritime Historical Society and the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Agency.

Earned a Doctor of Letters from the State University of New York for his first non-fiction work, The Sea Hunters, released in 1996.

Clive will be on hand to accept his award at the ThrillerFest Awards Banquet on July 1, 2006, with his son, Dirk.
