Scott Sigler's Galactic Football League coming to bookstores in August

One challenge for a novelist these days is to build a "platform"—most publishers won't even look at a manuscript unless the author somehow already has a following. (Yes, this is as backward as it sounds.)

Scott Sigler is an author who's figured out how to do that. Before he was published, Sigler built an online following giving away his self-recorded audiobooks as free, serialized podcasts. (In fact, that's where I got the idea to start my own audiobook series.) His listeners have downloaded more than eleven million individual episodes.

His Galactic Football League books—a YA series which combines sports, organized crime, and sci-fi—have been available as serialized audiobook podcasts, limited edition hardcovers, and eBook editions. Now Sigler's Dark Øverlord Media is partnering with Diversion Books to publish the books in paperback and put them in bookstores. Diversion is an affiliate of the literary agency that represents Sigler; the books were not offered to traditional publishers. The first two volumes, The Rookie and The Starter, are scheduled to hit shelves in August.

“Scott Sigler has been extremely forward-thinking throughout his career,” says Diversion's Scott Waxman, "building a loyal audience through his bestselling thrillers and hugely popular podcasts. This new collaboration gives him more control over his content without losing traditional distribution.”

“We’re excited that Diversion can bring these stories to a wider audience,” says Sigler. “We describe the series as THE BLINDSIDE meets STAR WARS meets THE GODFATHER, so it has a unique appeal for young sports fans and athletes as well as those who love sci-fi, two groups which are often one and the same. We know that the hardcovers, eBooks and audiobooks have helped get a lot of kids into reading—we’re proud of that and are excited to continue the effort.”
